WEEK 14 DIGITAL PRINTING TECHNOGY

week 14 class started by 4:30 pm as usual the discussion was mainly a presentation by a group of students who explained various printing techniques from ancient time to the new era.DR JAMALUNDEEN also took time to explain the concept, technique, and process of mordern digital photo and posters printing. Highlight of the discussion is presented below:

Digital printing refers to methods of printing from a digital-based image directly to a variety of media.[ It usually refers to professional printing where small-run jobs from desktop publishing and other digital sources are printed using large-format and/or high-volume laser or inkjet printers

\After your image is sized and sharpened, it’s ready for you to make a print. To this point, you’ve been working with a backlit display with vivid RGB colors that exceed the saturation and brightness of anything you can put on paper. Now the moment of truth arrives, and you need to translate what you see on the monitor to a print that can convey the same feeling. The problem is much the same as it was when photographers shot transparency film: There’s still a huge discrepancy between the dynamic range and color gamut that can be represented with a glowing backlit monitor image and what can be printed on paper, where the brightest thing is the white paper. Another major issue is the way images are constructed in the two different media. RGB images on the monitor exist in an additive color space: Red, green and blue light is added together to make white. CMYK images, which form the bulk of paper-based output, use cyan, magenta, yellow and black to subtract fr

Typically, all of our corrections and edits are made in RGB, and the majority of printed outputs are in CMYK. This includes desktop inkjet printers that are designed to receive RGB files. These printers internally transform RGB input into some kind of CcMmYKk-type color for the specific ink set that the printer uses. Even true RGB output devices, such as a LightJet printer, don’t actually have a standard RGB workspace color gamut. There-fore, all prints require a color transformation to occur from the workspace (editing color space) to the output (printing color space) for optimum results. All such transformations are handled by the
color management system.Photoshop uses ICC (Inter-national Color Consortium) profiles to manage color inside the application. Effective color management requires profiles that describe every device used in the image creation workflow from workspace to monitor to printer. I select default profiles for my RGB workspace and CMYK workspace in Photoshop color settings. Frequently, the default CMYK workspace is used for generic CMYK output. Ideally, the color transformations necessary for printing to a specific printer utilize a profile for that specific device. Fortunately, most of the modern desktop printers provide reasonable profiles that are installed with the device drivers, and we can use these profiles to control the color transforms for printing.

HIGH QUALITY RESOLUTION FOR BETTER PRINTING OUTPUT!

DIGITAL PRINTING  OUTPUT

Soft Proofing
Photoshop includes a method for previsualizing the effect that gamut reduction in the output has on the image. You can find this preview, often referred to as a soft proof, under the View menu. Select Proof Colors under the View menu or press Command + Y/Ctrl + Y to toggle the soft proof on or off. This changes the screen to simulate the appearance of the print. The default proof color is Working CMYK; you can select your CMYK color space in Photoshop Color Settings (Figure 1).

. Digital printing has a higher cost per page than more traditional offset printing methods, but this price is usually offset by avoiding the cost of all the technical steps required to make printing plates. It also allows for on-demand printing, short turnaround time, and even a modification of the image (variable data) used for each impression.

The savings in labor and the ever-increasing capability of digital presses means that digital printing is reaching the point where it can match or supersede offset printing technology's ability to produce larger print runs of several thousand sheets at a low price.
ou can change the proof colors to match the output you’re going to use. Go to View > Proof Setup > Custom. You’ll get a dialog that allows you to select a profile for a printer and a rendering intent for your transformation (Figure 2). You can select any output profile you want; you aren’t restricted to working with CMYK or any of the default selections such as Monitor RGB or Windows/Macintosh RGB. If you have a profile for an Epson printer, you can select it here. Select View > Proof Setup to change the output device you want to simulat

Digital images are exposed onto true, light sensitive photographic paper with lasers and processed in photographic developers and fixers. These prints are true photographs and have continuous tone in the image detail. The archival quality of the print is as high as the manufacturer's rating for any given photo paper used. In large format prints, the greatest advantage is that, since no lens is used, there is no vignetting or detail distortion in the corners of the image.
Digital printing technology has grown significantly over the past few years with substantial developments in quality and sheet sizes.

The Simulate check boxes at the bottom of this dialog are particularly interesting. The Simulate options allow you to see a more accurate preview and force an absolute color match to the screen. However, evaluating the color this way requires a little practice. When you select Proof Setup and check the Preview box, you might observe a very slight change in appearance, depending on the color gamut of the original. Normally, you’ll see very little change.

When you select Ink Black, the preview changes to reflect the actual intensity of the black ink on the paper to be printed. This can make the image seem a little dull, but it still isn’t entirely accurate. To be accurate, you need to select Paper White. This often results in a very dull renditio

Digital printing has many advantages over traditional methods. Some applications of note include:
  • Desktop publishing – inexpensive home and office printing is only possible because of digital processes that bypass the need for printing plates
  • Variable data printing – uses database-driven print files for the mass personalization of printed materials
  • Fine art – archival digital printing methods include real photo paper exposure prints and giclée prints on watercolor paper using pigment based inks.
  • Print on Demand – digital printing is used for personalized printing for example, children's books customized with a child's name, photo books (such as wedding photo books), or any other short run books  of varying page quantities and binding techniques.
  • Advertising – often used for outdoor banner advertising and event signage, in trade shows, in the retail sector at point of sale or point of purchase, and in personalized direct mail campaigns.
  • Photos – digital printing has revolutionized photo printing in terms of the ability to retouch and color correct a photograph before printing.
  • Architectural Design – new media that conforms to a variety of surfaces has enabled interior and exterior spaces to be transformed using digitally printed wall murals and floor graphics.

WEEK 13 SPECIAL EFFECT 2

Tips for creating special effects

Creating edge effects
You can use various techniques to treat the edges of an effect applied to only part of an image. To leave a distinct edge, simply apply the filter. For a soft edge, feather the edge, and then apply the filter. For a transparent effect, apply the filter, and then use the Fade command to adjust the selection’s blending mode and opacity.

Applying filters to layers

Blend and fade filter effects

The Fade command changes the opacity and blending mode of any filter, painting tool, erasing tool, or color adjustment. The Fade command blending modes are a subset of those in the painting and editing tools options (excluding the Behind and Clear modes). Applying the Fade command is similar to applying the filter effect on a separate layer and then using the layer opacity and blending mode controls.

You can apply filters to individual layers or to several layers in succession to build up an effect. For a filter to affect a layer, the layer must be visible and must contain pixels—for example, a neutral fill color.

Creating backgrounds
By applying effects to solid‑color or grayscale shapes, you can generate a variety of backgrounds and textures. You might then blur these textures. Although some filters have little or no visible effect when applied to solid colors (for example, Glass), others produce interesting effects.

Applying filters to individual channels
You can apply a filter to an individual channel, apply a different effect to each color channel, or apply the same filter but with different settings.

Combining multiple effects with masks or duplicate images
Using masks to create selection areas gives you more control over transitions from one effect to another. For example, you can filter the selection created with a mask.

Improving image quality and consistency
You can disguise faults, alter or enhance images, or create a relationship among images by applying the same effect to each. Use the Actions panel to record the steps you take to modify one image, and then apply this action to the other images.

You can also use the History Brush tool to paint a filter effect onto part of the image. First, apply the filter to an entire image. Next, step back in the History panel to the image state before the filter was applied, and set the history brush source to the filtered state by clicking in the well at the left side of the history state. Then paint the image.

WEEK 10 PHOTOSHOP IMAGE TRANSFORMATION

The topic discussed and practised id photoshop image transformation. In Photoshop, Transform is used to scale, rotate, skew, and just distort the perspective of any graphic you’re working with in general.

Scaling Graphics

One of the most basic transformations Photoshop is capable of is scaling a graphic. Scaling allows you to enlarge or shrink a graphic around a reference point. To scale a graphic, we go to Edit > Transform > Scale.
A set of handles will appear around our selected elements in the document (such as layers, or shapes). By moving anyone of these handles, we can adjust the size of the object. To apply the transformation, hit Enter.

Constraining Proportions while Scaling

Often times, you’ll find it necessary to constrain the proportions of your objects when scaling. This can easily be achieved by Holding Shift while dragging a transformation handle. You can additionally scale from the center reference point by Holding Alt (or Option on Mac OS), or combine the two by holding shift and alt at the same time while scaling.

Rotating Objects in Photoshop

To Rotate an Object in Photoshop, go to Edit > Transform > Rotate. Handles will appear as they did with a Scaling Transform, but instead of dragging one of these, go just outside of the object until you see a curved arrow rotate icon.
At this point, simple drag left or right to rotate the selected object. Once again, you must finish applying the transformation by pressing Enter.

Be Precise with your Rotations!

You can rotate in 15 Degree Increments with this useful little shortcut. While you’re rotating an object, simply hold down the shift button.

Skew, Distort, and Perspective Transformations

The next 3 transformations are all similar, because they are all controlled by dragging handles. That is not to say that they are used to do the same thing, they simply all operate in the same manner. You can apply a Skew, Distort, orPerspective Transformation from Edit > Transform.
Skew: Skew transformations slant objects either vertically or horizontally.
Distort: Distort transformations allow you to stretch an image in ANY direction freely.
Perspective: The Perspective transformation allows you to add perspective to an object.

Warping an Object

The Warp Transformation is quite a bit different compared to the other transformations. The entire shape of the object can be modified, making this transformation useful for several different effects. To use a Warp Transformation go to Edit > Transform > Warp. A Mesh will appear over your object that you can adjust by dragging control points, lines, or any other area inside of it. You can additionally apply a preset warp from the options bar.
